Introduction

Memeza Africa is a dynamic 22 piece ensemble that combines traditional African singers, dancers & drummers with the original music of Canadian artist, Holly Wright. This high energy performance delivers a collage of sound with stunning harmonies, powerful soloists and a blend of musical cultures.

What is the mission of Memeza Africa?

The majority of the members are unemployed and through their gift of music they hope to generate an income for themselves and families, as well as being Ambassadors for the fight against HIV / AIDS in South Africa.

Memeza Africa’s goals are as follows:-

  • Display the talents of Soweto both locally and internationally

  • Educate audiences about South Africa culture, music and dance

  • Deliver an emotionally charged musical escape

  • Generate income

  • Conduct music workshops for both adults and children

  • Demonstrate how two worlds can come together in harmony through music

Members of this choir have performed for, or shared the stage with: Nelson Mandela; Desmond Tutu; Oprah Winfrey; Quincy Jones; Ladysmith Black Mombazo & Soweto Gosple Choir.

Memeza Africa is a talented traditional South African choir fused with the singer/songwriter talents of Holly Wright, a Canadian music award-nominee. This group was born out of the dream of Holly’s to re-record her song; The World Shall Love Again while living in South Africa.

She met with choir director, Jimmy Mulovhedzi, and through the mutual passion for the message of this song, soon developed a strong bond and common goal – to bring their two cultures together through music, and spread a message of love and tolerance. This lead to a unique and powerful musical collaboration, bringing together the songs and styles of South Africa and Canada.

Although the languages are different, Memeza Africa speaks a universal language that goes directly to the heart & soul of the listener.

“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”

 ~ Nelson Mandela

Music is the universal language that has moulded every culture around the world, since the beginning of time. Music reflects cultural values, teaches tolerance and acceptance, and interprets our hopes and dreams. Music is not only the universal language of our hearts, but the fibres of our community.

It is through music that we are able to understand and empathize with other cultures around the world.
